in search of angels

still hanging in taking care of/ trying to organize the taking care of my mom. she' been home from rehab for almost two weeks & I'm looking into assisted living which she has agreed to consider as we'll as trying (very trying) aides. several didn't show up. others not patient enough to communicate with her. so it goes.

angels apply here.
sigh.

happy holidays all.

where was i? an update

where indeed.
where am i,
rather, is the question.
betwixt for sure
and somewhat between.

in the between
i did go to the so called
meta monumental garage sale at MoMA

about which the less said
in these parts
the better
lest we discuss the emperor,
and his lack of clothing
or question the legitimacy
of performance art.
you can read more here if you must, or here

when i returned home
after the electricity & water were restored
i had an unrelated-to-the-storm
steam leak in the wall between my
bathroom & kitchen
necessitating the tearing apart of the kitchen,
and the wall
and reassembling of its pieces which,
for some reason didn't quite fit where they once were...
how is that?
and the sloppy refurbishing
of the bathroom ceiling

and

daily visits to my mom
at rehab lo these four weeks.
good news/bad news on that:
the good news is that the facility is two blocks from my apartment.
the bad news is that (let's all say it together)
the facility is two blocks from my apartment.

she's meant to be
discharged on nov. 30
with a large question mark after the
THEN WHAT
in my head.

home health aides for certain,
assisted living perhaps...

being the only child never sucked so much.
sigh.

storm surge

words flood in like hudson waves lapping at hudson street where they don't belong. cascade and spill and flow. I never knew how like water words behave.

torrents of words trying to make sense of so much darkness so much wet.

after two nights of vivid dark & silence punctuated by the crackle of battery powered radio voices, two nights of diminishing water I chose to leave the dead zone, cross the border into light at 26th.

buses ran but didn't stop, full of those from deeper in the dark than I.

refugees bound north gather at bus stops like Hitchcock crows, two, then four, seven, twelve then four and twenty.

finally a ride in a livery cab not playing fast and loose with fares.

fifteen bucks from soho to 66th in ridiculous traffic, even crammed in with four others going north was less than the meter would have read.

so here i lie, comfortable and bathed, fed and plugged in, charged and observing online and televised, the singular womb of downtown.

shall i say I almost miss it? the adventure of it. but only enough to have returned yesterday, briefly, for warmer clothing, to toss what had defrosted and to hike once more up and down ten flights of stairs.

tomorrow, they tell us, we'll get the power back. but new yorkers never really lose power. we just convert it to other forms of energy.

new mexico in watercolor

confronted by the complexities of the landscape in abiqui, new mexico, the first exercise suggested by meredith nemirov our instructor was to do a contour drawing.

on a page folded into quarters, we began on one segment, drawing the contours of the landscape without lifting the pen, moving from one panel to the next, confronting one segment of landscape at a time. small steps.

my drawings didn't strictly follow the rules - i lifted the pen frequently - but i became enamored of the technique. the intricacies of the landscape, decrypted into simple line, became my way of seeing all week.

the line work prepared me well for...

the sky

this is the sky that brought me home from new mexico

a bit of new mexico, more to come

spent a week at ghost ranch, where georgia o'keeffe lived, at a watercolor painting workshop. the sky was cobalt, the cottonwoods cadmium yellow.

fall in battery park city

i'm still obsessed with this pile of rocks. i take liberties but i keep coming back

these first two are shiva oil stick - first time i've tried them. i went out today and bought two sticks each of three different brands to try. LOVE being able to draw a painting.

sketching and a reminder

first the reminder. the ellsworth kelly show at the metropolitan museum closes on monday. if you're in the vicinity kelly is a genius of simplicity and line

i did this ginko leaf after my most recent visit to the show this week

these are from wednesday sketch class at battery park city.

catching up with myself

two saturdays and a wednesday in between painting and drawing at battery park city. i'm really enjoying watercolor since i freed myself from the need to be representational. they're still rocks and trees to me and they can be what you will for you.

awash again

in water and color.

overcast is beautiful downtown but problematic when the clouds let loose as they did on wednesday half an hour before the end of making art in battery park city. still, this tree's roots

inspired more color than you'd imagine...
