remains of the day journal

here's the very rough hewn video
(appropriate to the subject actually)
of my first scrappy 'remains of the day' journal.
(bows deeply to workshop creator mary ann moss
of dispatch from l.a.
and the participants of this online workshop)

no journal entries as yet...
i've been sidetracked (and satin stitched)
by my new (first ever) sewing machine

was it these shreads shot in the morning

that lead me to merge these in the evening?

scant half inches of color
discarded shards of
other people's fabric
joined in a jumbled rainbow

quilt stripes

allegedly purchased for mary ann moss'
remains of the day
scrappy journal making class,
my first sewing machine has inspired
the accumulation of sewing and quilt making
paraphernalia - high quality shears,
rotary cutter and it's necessary companion
the rotary cutting board, plastic ruler,
seam ripper and several boxes filled with
deconstrcted thrift shop shirts.
i'm especially fond, as you can see,
of hawaiian shirts.

here are the first practice strips -
the seams aren't straight and the strips aren't
of equal widths...but still

looking up

victorian collage at the Met

from the press release:
In the 1860s and 1870s, long before the embrace of collage techniques by avant-garde artists of the early 20th century, aristocratic Victorian women were experimenting with photocollage. Playing with Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage, on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art February 2 – May 9, 2010, is the first exhibition to comprehensively examine this little-known phenomenon. Whimsical and fantastical Victorian photocollages, created using a combination of watercolor drawings and cut-and-pasted photographs, reveal the educated minds as well as accomplished hands of their makers. With subjects as varied as new theories of evolution, the changing role of photography, and the strict conventions of aristocratic society, the photocollages frequently debunked stuffy Victorian clichés with surreal, subversive, and funny images

lazy and cold

the recent blurry shots
are not, in fact, iPhone shots.
they're made with my Canon s3-is
while i walk to and from work
clicking without looking.
with gloves on.
lazy i know but
i kinda like some of the results
and it's just too cold
to tarry...

another scrappy journal

the inspiration of mary ann moss
and the participants in her
remains of the day scrappy journal workshop
plus a stash of fabric from a friend in texas
combined with salvation army hawaiian shirts
and my own natural
quick-and-dirty-instant-gratification style
have produced another
scrappy journal cover.
the pages are still in development
but the desire to run fabric through the
new sewing machine was too strong.

found art

i passed these
and got halfway down
the subway stairs
before realizing
that i had to make the shots.
too elegant not to.
